Lazertran Techniques

Lazertran Decoupage and Stamped Doll

You may have heard about Lazertran, but here's a new application for stampers and decoupage artists. If you have ever wanted to put your stamped or even embossed images onto impossible surfaces you can now. Just stamp direct onto Lazertran paper. For embossing , wipe the sheet with an anti static cloth to allow the easy removal of excess embossing powder stamp, apply embossing powder and set with heat gun, oven or hold an iron under the sheet of Lazertran.

Materials

  1. Regular Lazertran paper: review package instructions for basic application directions
  2. Black waterproof permanent ink: the type used on shrink plastic
  3. Art stamps specifically from Angel companies, which permit hand stamping (but no mechanical reproduction) without infringement of copyright. (Always check individual stamp manufacturers for their Angel policies)
  4. Embossing powder
  5. Acrylic paints in metallic and irridescent colours
  6. Acrylic gloss medium and 1/2" flat paint brush
  7. Basin of warm water: using warm water (from the tap) allows the Lazertran material to stretch and mold itself more snugly into unusual curves or indentations. If that is not enough then use a hair dryer
  8. Small Artists brush
  9. Scissors, paper towels

Doll designed by Robin Schoenfeld

Method

  1. Paint the body of the doll for a colourful background. Allow each layer to dry before moving onto the next. Bronze acrylic is first brushed on, then transparent glazes of orange and yellow liquid acrylic are layered onto this. Deep blue irridescent calligraphy ink, and more bronze paint is sponged on to accent. Set doll aside to dry completely
  2. Using black permanent ink, stamp your chosen rubber stamp images directly onto the shiny side of a sheet of Lazertran paper. (On one A4 sheet about 16 different stamp images were used in this project.) Keep your hand steady, jiggling the stamp during impressions will cause smearing of the image on the smooth surface. If you want to emboss the stamp do it now. The ink should dry rapidly. An iron, hairdryer or oven can be used. Cut out the images with the scissors, trimming closely. (If you have a detailed image like a dragonfly, do not try to cut out around each leg or antennae. Just trim around the general shape of the image)
  3. Gather water basin, acrylic medium, paintbrush and paper towels. Crumple one paper towel into a tight ball
  4. Following Lazertran package instructions, drop an image into the water. While the backing paper is detaching, paint a thin layer of acrylic medium onto the doll's body in an area just slightly larger than the image you plan to place there
  5. Slide off the backing paper, and lay image into the still wet acrylic. If the surface is curved, use your fingers to mold and stretch the transparency gently to shape. Using the crumpled ball of paper towelling, gently blot and press the image down snugly to the body of the doll, mopping up excess moisture as you do so. The paper towel can also be pinched into ridges to smooth the images around corners, or down into indentations
  6. Repeat steps 4&5 for the rest of the images. Images transparent, and can be layered for interesting affects. Seal completed doll with a coat of acrylic medium to finish
  7. After about a minute the image will slide off the backing sheet on a clear decal
  8. Apply craft glue to the area you want to put the embossed images
  9. Slide the decal onto the glue and brush flat
  10. Continue with the other decal. You can finish with any varnish
